The Pampered Hot Drink Consumer

Flavia Hot Drink Maker

Just spent a few hours at the car dealer getting something checked on my car. To help make all of us poor folk who are just sitting there waiting, a bit happier, this car dealership has a big screen TV, comfy chairs, bagels and donuts (in the morning but changes to fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon), and most importantly – a machine that makes any type and any flavor of warm drink you could possibly want. There were various hot tea options, regular, decaf and flavored coffees, espresso and yummy hot chocolate.  I fell in love!  So the question is, who owns one of these machines from heaven, and which is the best for home use????

As a single person, and a relative “newbie” to coffee consumption, I never thought much about having one of these wonderful machines. I decided last Fall that I was worth it and more to the point so were my guests. I found a fabulous sale price on the single serve K-cup model and bought it. I am in LOVE with it so far. I am able to prepare any of my hot drink favorites with it and I read that soon there will be soups available too. I can easily serve my guests- albeit one at a time. They do not seem to mind the very short wait time that it takes to prepare each individual beverage. If I had a large family or hosted large groups, I would definitely have purchased one of the larger models, but my little model is just wonderful.

Thank you Shari and Matt for adding this to your site!

Mary Ann, maybe starting smaller is a good idea to make sure I actually use it! My routine is make a pot and drink it for a couple days, just reheating in the microwave, so fresh each time would seem pretty decadent!

Shari, my husband’s office has a Kuerig coffee maker and he loves it. He’d like to get one for home but I would rather have my electric pot. I can have less expensive cups of coffee during the day even though I have to heat them up in the microwave oven. Because I put milk in my coffee, it doesn’t matter to me to have to reheat the coffee. The K-cups aren’t cheap either. But I must confess that we changed from instant coffee years ago when we moved to the Seattle area and are now hooked on Starbucks, which isn’t cheap either, even though we are back on the East Coast.

    Love your new website.

i have a Keurig and prior to that a Flavia machine The Flavia is by far my favorite for coffee, lattes, and the various toppings. The problem with Flavia is you must order online. Nothing can be purchased in store. The other problem is the lack of “regular” decaf tea. They only have herbal varieties available decaf.
    .
We now use Keurig for the ease of purchasing coffee pods and the variety of tea pods

We still use our 12 cup coffee maker for daily use. But we fell in love with our Keurig too. However the k-cups are expensive so we only use it for specialty coffees and teas.

I do the same thing Sherrie. I use my Cuisinart coffeemaker for everyday use and only use my Keurig for specialty coffees because of the cost.

I love my Keurig Platinum! This model has a water tank that doesn’t have to be refilled everytime you make a beverage and it filters the water. It also has two temperature settings, so you can get HOT coffee, tea etc. The removeable cup stand allows you to put a tall glass (for iced beverages) or travel mug underneath. The K cups are a bit pricey, but you can use the “My K Cup” to use any coffee or tea that you love, rather than the K cups. The K cups can be purchased on the internet reasonably or at the big box …mart, etc. They have a huge variety of flavors and name brands (Dunkin Donuts, Snapple Iced Teas, Bigelow tea, Swiss Miss hot chocolate, etc.) which is great when entertaining. The best price I have found for it is on that shopping channel that begins with a Q! Hope that helps!

PS…I miss your show that was on HGTV!

Debbie, what wonderful information that I’m sure everyone will appreciate. The Keurig Platinum sounds like the model to have! To your other point, we miss doing room by room as well, and are currently working on acquiring sponsors for a third season of Around the House. It will be smaller project though, nothing on the scale of room by room, but educational, inspiring and hopefully entertaining. thank you so much for taking the time to give your input.

I have two. First one was a Mister Coffee. A little less expensive than a Keurig, but works just as well. You can’t use the My Kcups in it, but there are Eco cups available at the grocery store or Amazon. With these cups, you can use your own coffee, which is less expensive than the ready-made ones. Also lots of these just about any where. I now have a Keurig. I don’t think it works any better than the Mister Coffee. Just wanted to try it. It’s a very easy way to make a cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa, etc, but it does add up quickly if you don’t make up your own cups and you can only make coffee in these. By the way, I too still use my regular coffee maker when I have company, don’t want to make my own cups, or am out of the ready made. I like options.

    • Shari Hiller says

Lynn, smart. I think having options would be good – don’t dispose of the tried and true because it has a place too. Thanks for your comment.

I have used them at work, and never felt the coffee tasted as good as regular brewed. However, I know several people who have them and love them. You can get a little reusable basket made for these coffeemakers and put in your own coffee; a little less convenient, but a great money saver.

    • Shari Hiller says

Leslie, it seems it’s unanimous that the machines are great, but the cost is a bit of a disadvantage. Thanks for your thoughts.

  8. Sherri says

You can buy the little cups from Keurig to put your own coffee into to use in the machine and its the same as your regular pot of coffee

  9. Jeannine says

You can buy little strainers & use your own coffee….my husband likes Starbuck’s decaf. It saves a lot of money. We bought the strainers at Bed,Bath & Beyond where the Keurig supplies are.

  10. Ann says

I have a Keurig and love it, but I agree the K-cups are very pricey. I use regular or flavored tea bags instead and am delighted with the result.

  11. Linda says

I have a keurig at home and a Keurig Breville at work. Love them both. I do use occasionally at home the cup that you put your own coffee in. But I think that the kcups are pretty reasonable. I buy them on line and love the teas also. You never waste any coffee by letting it get old and stale by using the K-cups. To me that was more expensive.

    • Shari Hiller says

Very true, Linda. I’ve thrown away old coffee that actually had mold on it. This happens in the summer here when the air is so moist and hot…and I don’t drink as much coffee!!! Maybe Keurig for summer – Mr. coffee for winter?

  12. Jean McKnight says

I love mine. You have to get one. You can buy the k cups or you can buy the little empty k cup and put whatever kind of coffee you like in it. Its great.
