You know how Shari and I like to scope out new products that make not only our lives a little easier but also all of your lives as well.  While we were at a home show in the winter, we ran into Ryan and Melanie of RocLok Hide a Key and they had a simple but very practical product that we just couldn't pass up and we had to invite them to our website to talk about this neat little safety product RocLok Hide a Key.

We've all seen those fake plastic rocks that have the little slide in the back for storing your keys in.  That's the problem, everyone has! More over, they don't look real and offer no security whatsoever if they are knocked over.  Contractor lockboxes are safer but stick out like a sore thumb, impede access to your water faucet and all but shout from the roof-tops that your keys are inside.  Check out the RocLok Hide a Key.  It's billed as the "safest way to hide a key outside," and once you see one in person you are likely to agree.

First and foremost the RocLok actually looks like a real rock. It's made of a fiberglass reinforced concrete and molded with rubber from rocks giving every piece incredible detail.  The material used also gives the RocLok a realistic feel and weight.  Instead of the old plastic type of rock hide a key that weighs only a couple of ounces, all of the RocLok models have weight to them ranging from 4 to 12 pounds!  Anyone kicking around for the hide a key is more likely break a toe rather than turn a RocLok over.

The realism doesn't stop there.  Every RocLok is hand stained and can be made to order.  The concrete material allows the RocLok to age naturally with the surroundings its placed into.  untitled-3

That means that over time your RocLok will collect dirt, grow moss (if desired) and develop traits specific to your location.

The second cool thing about the RocLok Hide a Key is that instead of keeping the keys inside with a simple sliding lid, the folks at RocLok went a step further and incorporated a combination lock into the lid.  It's like a contractors lockbox built into a rock.  Plus, like a contractors lock, you get to set the code, there are 3 digits and 1,000 possibilities.  The great thing about this feature is that now you can tell your kids, neighbors or even in-home contractors what the code is and change it when they no longer need access to the key.  No more searching for another hiding spot or having spare keys floating all over the place.

The key chamber on the RocLok Hide a Key is very roomy.  In fact if you wanted to, not only could you keep a couple house keys but also the valet key to your car, the keys to a pool gate or storage shed etc.  Really the possibilities are endless.  Heck, if you're into RV'ing or hunting, what better way to make sure you don't lock yourself out in the middle of nowhere?

Now onto the real question, how durable is a RocLok?  We can all agree that a 12 pound hunk of concrete is probably not easy to crack open. In fact, the RocLok folks have a video of someone slamming it with a 12 pound sledge hammer without causing effect.  But what about water, doesn't it cause the lock to rust?  One would think so, but the locks used on every RocLok are rated for use specifically for use in outdoor settings.  Plus the inventor, Ryan Belshee, designed the chamber to keep the lock from ever making direct contact with the ground.  The special design of the chamber forms an air pocket when the RocLok is set down.  If you've ever placed an empty wine glass upside down into a tub of water you'll understand the idea behind this concept.

Another thing that makes the RocLok Hide a Key great, it was invented and is hand made right here in the USA.  The company is proud of their US roots and strives to raise consumer awareness of the importance of buying other items that are made in the USA.
