Swedish meatballs are always a party favorite.  Who doesn’t like eating their food with a toothpick! These treats are very flavorful and captured the heart of my “meat lover” little boy.  I have a feeling I’ll be making these again soon, party or not!

 Ingredients:

  •  1 lb. ground beef
(Use ground turkey for a low-fat recipe)
  • 1 medium onion chopped finely
  • 1 egg
  • 3 slices bread, no crust and slightly wet
  • 1 bottle Heinz chili sauce
  • 8 oz. grape jelly

Instructions:

1) Mix the meat, onion, egg and bread and form small meatballs.

2) Melt jelly with chili sauce in saucepan and bring to a boil.

3) Add the meatballs and simmer 1 hour. Serve with fancy toothpicks just because they are so much fun!

Thanks again go to one of our favorite “Board Broads” who added this recipe to our web cookbook.  (I’m going back into the book and will try many more of the recipes so I can share them with you all.  Those gals can really cook!)

I use this same recipe in a crockpot with kielbasa (pre-cooked). It's yummy.
Try this variation with mini hotdogs: current jelly with a little mustard to taste. The kids really love the dogs.

Everyone looks at me crazy when they rave about these meatballs & I tell them there's jelly in them.smilies/smiley.giflol I save time by using frozen homestyle meatballs in the crockpot with the jelly/chili sauce.

Boy, these Swedish Meatballs have really gotten some comments! I'll bet the frozen meatballs are just as good, since it's really all about the sauce!!

One day while in line at the grocery store seeing my supplies for another version of meatballs, the clerk asked what I was making. I told her meatballs and she told me I had all the wrong ingredients. She then left the check out counter and picked up chile sauce and grape jelly and verbally gave me the recipe. I have been using that as my "secret" recipe ever since!
These are the best.

What a riot!

I've never had a store clerk be interested in anything I was buying. What a great place to shop!!

I once was buying beer & told the 80+ year old clerk about my recipe for beer bread. She held up the check-out line to get a piece of paper & wrote it down.smilies/smiley.giflol

I remember eating these meatballs at a school pot lunch function years ago and I asked someone for the recipe and she said grape jelly and 'something' that I could never remember. I have been looking for this recipe ever since...I am making it tonight for my husband's retirement party and look forward to these tasty meatballs once again...THANKS SO MUCH...not only for this but for finding you again on this website...I will be ordering your 13 episodes of Around the House next week and look forward to seeing and learing from you both once again. I sure have missed your programs...I used to record them everytime you were on and used SO MANY of your hints and ideas. Too bad I can't get your program on my PBS stations here in North Carolina...but I'll continue to hope they will find you for our area. Thanks so much
