I just love it when I can pull together a pretty table for a holiday or special occasion and know that though it looks like a million bucks, I didn’t have to break the bank. This year I bought 4 placemats, 4 melamine dinner plates 4 napkins and made 4 napkin rings and it cost me less than $30!
The red round woven straw placemats were on sale at Bed, Bath & Beyond for $1.99 a piece. Since I get a coupon in the mail from them nearly every week, I can cut that price down by 20%!
The white plates I found at Target and I’m sure they were about 2 or 3 dollars each. I actually bought 12 at the time because I was looking for something inexpensive but sturdy to use when we eat outside.
The napkins were also from Target and they cost 99 cents each. They aren’t actually napkins, just holiday bandanas, but they will work just fine when the kid start wiping ketchup and mustard on them!
The real decorative touch is the handmade napkin rings that I think I safely say I am famous for! I have been making felt napkin rings for just about every holiday for years, and I have quite a stash of them now. These are the first 4th of July ones I’ve made and I’m real happy with them.
Star Napkin Rings
If you are interested in making the star napkin rings or perhaps a flag design or even Statue of Liberty, all you have to do is find a template. Cookie cutters work well, ink stamps, clip art, etc. are great items to use as a template. Then, just get creative with how you put them together. Here’s how I made the stars.
Materials List:
Red, white and blue felt squares
Coordinating embroidery thread
Buttons (optional embellishments)
Scissors
Needle
Pins
Instructions:
1. Begin by using your template to trace and cut out the shapes for your napkin ring.
2. Pin the front and back together and then hand or machine stitch the two together.
3. Leave an opening in the stitching so the napkin ring can be stuffed. I stuffed mine with the scraps of felt from cutting out the star shapes. Notice I cut them into tiny pieces before using the as stuffing.
4. Once the shape is stuffed to your liking, finish stitching the two pieces together to close the opening.
5. Now is the time to add any embellishments you’d like. I added buttons to the center of mine but you could add a bunch of sparkly beads or a patch!
6. The last step is to add the actual “ring” to wrap around the napkin! Cut two strips of felt at ¾” wide by 7” long. Pin and stitch them together around the edges using the blanket stitch.
Add the ring to the back of your shape by overlapping and slip stitching. I’ll bet that once you get a set made for the 4th, you’ll immediately start working on the next holiday!!
