Whether your child attends conventional school or home school, it can be a challenge to get kids to focus on their homework! Why not set up a “station” where they can focus on their work without distraction? Here are a few tips to get you and your child on the way to a successful year of homework!
Designate an area where school work is to be done every day.
This could be a desk in your child’s bedroom, the kitchen table or another clutter-free spot in your home. The key is to create a routine by designating a location for the day’s school work.
Eliminate as many distractions as possible.
- Turn off the TV
- Close the laptop
- Take away the cell phone
- Remind other children that their sibling should not be disturbed during homework time
Provide the tools needed to accomplish the work.
Doing this prevents your child from leaving the homework station in search of an item…and becoming distracted by something along the way!
I gathered things I already had in my house and put together a simple homework station supply kit. I don’t know about you, but it made me want to sit down and diagram some sentences!
Here are a few things you may want to include in your supply kit:
- Index Cards
- Post It Notes
- Calculator/Math Accessories
Creating a dedicated homework station can give your child a sense of ownership and increase his or her desire to get that work finished! Have a great school year!
